Internationally qualified nurses
New Zealand nursing registration
Understand the key stages the Nursing Council of New Zealand (NCNZ) may require when assessing an internationally qualified nurse.
The pathway at a glance
Follow the current Nursing Council instructions
Applications are assessed individually. Your exact requirements depend on your education, registration and experience, so use the Council’s current instructions as the source of truth.
1. Verify your documents
Start with the verification service currently specified by NCNZ.
The Council’s internationally qualified nurse pathway refers applicants to TruMerit to verify and authenticate required credentials. Allow time for verification and have institutions or regulators provide documents as instructed.
2. Apply to NCNZ
Submit your application and supporting evidence through the Council’s process.
Prepare identity, qualification, registration, English-language and practice evidence as required for your circumstances. The Council may request additional documents while assessing your application.
3. Complete any required assessment
Additional competence requirements are determined by NCNZ.
Depending on the assessment outcome, you may be asked to complete specified cultural safety learning, theoretical or clinical competence assessments, or other requirements. Follow the Council’s notice for the exact pathway and sequence.
4. Meet remaining registration requirements
Registration follows only after all applicable requirements are met.
NCNZ will explain any final requirements and the steps for registration. Employment and registration are separate matters; the Nursing Council does not recruit or place nurses.
How DREAMVISION can support you
We can help you map the steps, organise preparation and explore relevant exam support where appropriate. Our guidance does not replace a decision by NCNZ or the credential verification provider.
