Nursing Registration in the UK, Ireland, and Australia

The UK, Ireland, and Australia offer excellent career opportunities for internationally qualified nurses through structured registration processes.

  • UK: Nurses must apply to the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC), meet English language requirements (IELTS/OET), and pass the Computer-Based Test (CBT) and Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE).
  • Ireland: Registration is through the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI), requiring credential assessment, English proficiency, and an adaptation program or aptitude test.
  • Australia: Nurses must register with AHPRA, complete an Outcome-Based Assessment (OBA), and meet English language criteria.

Registering as a nurse in Australia !

involves a structured process managed by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) and the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (Ahpra). Recent updates have streamlined this process, particularly for internationally qualified nurses (IQNs) from specific countries. Below is a step-by-step guide to the current registration pathway:

Step 1: Self-Check Assessment

Begin by completing the Self-Check on the NMBA website. This online tool evaluates your qualifications and determines your eligibility for registration. Based on your responses, you’ll be assigned to one of three assessment pathways:

Stream A: For IQNs from countries with nursing qualifications deemed substantially equivalent to Australian standards.

Stream B: For IQNs requiring further assessment to establish equivalence.

Stream C: For IQNs whose qualifications are not considered substantially equivalent.

Access the Self-Check tool here:

Step 2: Portfolio Submission

If directed to Stream B or C, you’ll need to submit a Portfolio of documents for further assessment. This includes evidence of:

Step 3: Orientation Program

All IQNs must complete the Orientation Program, designed to familiarize you with the Australian healthcare context, including its standards, policies, and practices. The program consists of two parts:

Orientation Part 1: An online learning module to be completed before registration.

Orientation Part 2: An employer-led component undertaken after gaining employment in Australia.

More information on the Orientation Program can be found here:

Step 4: Examination Requirement

Depending on your assessment pathway, you may need to undertake examinations to demonstrate your competence:

Multiple-Choice Question (MCQ) Exam: Assesses theoretical nursing knowledge.

Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE): Evaluates practical clinical skills through simulated scenarios.Details on examination requirements and preparation resources are available here:
